How does the engineer reach the drainage outlet?<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">A better approach is to consider the entire journey.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">Commercial rooftops can contain exposed edges, rooflights, ducts, cables, pipework and changes in level. Designing a maintenance route therefore means thinking about every stage, from the moment somebody arrives on the roof to the point where the work actually takes place.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p3\"><b>Begin With the Most Obvious Hazard<\/b><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p2\">The roof edge is a logical starting point because it represents one of the clearest hazards associated with working at height.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">Rather than considering edge protection only around the specific area where maintenance takes place, facilities teams can examine where workers could potentially encounter an exposed edge throughout their journey.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">Collective protection can provide a physical barrier that does not depend on every individual remembering to take a particular action. Access may involve ladders, hatches, doors or changes between roof levels. Rooflights and other potentially fragile areas may sit directly between an access point and the equipment being maintained. The HSE advises that work on fragile roofs should be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hsestudyguide.com\/roof-work-safety\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s1\">avoided where possible<\/span><\/a> and identifies measures such as perimeter protection and suitable staging where access cannot be avoided.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">This is another reason to think in terms of complete routes rather than isolated work locations. Someone maintaining equipment in the middle of a roof still needs to get there and back.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p3\"><b>Finish at the Task<\/b><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p2\">Finally, consider the space immediately surrounding the equipment itself. Is there enough room to work? Can tools and replacement parts be positioned without blocking the return route? Will several people ever need access simultaneously?
