WORLD'S FIRST SUCCESSFUL TECHNOLOGY VERIFICATION OF 100% HYDROGEN-FUELED GAS TURBINE
The New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. and Obayashi Corporation announced successful technology verification, for the first time worldwide, of 100% hydrogen-fueled gas turbine operation with dry low NOx (nitrogen oxides) combustion technology. The key technology of this gas turbine is newly developed combustor component by Kawasaki, applying micro-mix combustion principle. And operation test was started in early May as part of the National program “Technology Development Project for Building a Hydrogen-besed Society”. Dry low NOx combustion technology improves the electrical efficiency comparing to the conventional combustion method: water injection, as well as reduction of NOx emissions.
The plant consists of a KAWASAKI GPB50D gas turbine generator set of 4,72 MWe, based on the gas turbine engine M5A-01, https://www.kawasaki-gasturbine.de/en/products/turbine-generator-sets?id=159, a 10 t / h Heat recovery steam generator and a 2 MW single-stage absorber of cooling capacity.
The customer's choice fell on the KAWASAKI gas turbine that, to date, is the most efficient one on the market in its power range and, for the specific energetical needs of the factory, was the choice that guarantee the better performance in term of saving.
Thanks to this project, the GPB50 units increase to three in Italy , furthermore the Kawasaki fleet in Italy increases to 15 units.

The second Kawasaki M-7 GPB80D gas turbine package was delivered to Barilla headquarters in Pedrignano last week on time, despite the COVID 19 pandemic. The trigeneration plant of 15.6 MW electric, 30 MW thermal, and 6 MW of absorption chillers will enter into operation next December according to schedule.
