The 10 Best Plunge Router in 2024

The Best Plunge Router in 2022

When it comes to deep cuts in wood, the adaptability of plunge routers trumps that of fixed base routers because of their ability to well dive. You may use the mounting hardware included with some of these routers to set them up as permanent routers.

Some people think plunge routers are superior to fixed-base routers because the former allows the base of the tool to rest on the material as the bit descends for the cut, making woodworking easier. When and why you’d utilize a plunge router, and whether or not you think it’s superior to a fixed-base one.

Item Dimensions LxWxH 17 x 10 x 7 inches
Voltage 120 Volts

Product Description

The Makita name is well-known among woodworkers for its high-quality, long-lasting power tools, and this router is no exception. We have faith in its durability thanks to its nearly exclusive use of metal parts across various applications.

This is one of the most lightweight routers we’ve used, yet it is constructed of sturdy components. When used manually, its light weight of 3.9 pounds makes it easy to move about your workpiece.

The plunger attachment is designed with big grips for maximum control during use. The plunger is attached firmly so that you may use it with confidence, yet it can be removed quickly and easily with a clip. A piece of transparent plastic is included in the plunger to shield you from flying sawdust and woodchips without obstructing your view of the project.

For one-handed use, the router has an attachment covered in thick rubber for a secure grip.

Thanks to the soft-start technology that minimizes vibration during power-up, you’ll have better command over the whole cutting process.

Thanks to its excellent balance, you won’t feel anything in the way of vibrations from the motor. With a horsepower rating of 1.14, it will easily power through whatever task you throw at it.

The motor’s speed is variable between 10,000 and 30,000 revolutions per minute, letting you find the sweet spot for your particular project. As a result, you may adjust the speed to minimize burning and tear-out when working with tougher woods, or to make clean, precise cuts while working with softer materials.

The motor is powerful while being quite quiet, operating at 79.5 dB. Even though it’s quiet enough to use without disturbing your neighbors, we advise you to use earplugs just in case.

The router’s rack and pinion controls make it simple to fine-tune the device for use on any given job.

Product Description

This router is typical of Bosch‘s contractor-grade equipment, which is built to withstand heavy use over time. It boasts a strong engine that can quickly and easily cut through any wood, from soft pine to hard maple and oak.

Being one of the loudest at 90 dB, this router’s strong motor explains why it is so noisy. Earplugs will be needed constantly, and the noise may be annoying to others in other parts of the house.

The motor’s speed may be adjusted between 8,000 and 25,000 RPM, allowing you to find the sweet spot for your particular material in terms of clean cuts, little tear-out, and rapid cutting. It may be molded to suit your needs regardless of the nature of your work. Furthermore, it is nicely balanced and creates less vibration even while moving rapidly.

This Bosch router is built to last with its sturdy metal and tough plastic construction.

It has a fixed-depth base and attractive hardwood handles that provide excellent grip for precise cutting. It has integrated measurements and a rack-and-pinion plunger base, so you can easily make fine adjustments and get the tool dialed in for precise cuts. The transparent shield on this router keeps you safe from flying sand and wood shavings without obstructing your view of the project. The dust-collecting port aids in keeping the work area clean and lessens the amount of effort required to clean up afterward.

Specifications

Brand Festool
Power Source Corded-electric
Item Dimensions LxWxH 15.55 x 11.61 x 12.8 inches
Voltage 120 Volts
Item Weight 17.9 Pounds

Product Description

Festool makes some of the finest equipment for dealing with wood, and this router is no exception. The sturdy 134-horsepower, 11.7-amp motor makes short work of any woodworking task.

Depending on the material you’re working with, control and cutting efficiency may be optimized by selecting a motor speed between 10,000 and 22,500 RPM.

You can be sure that it will survive many years of usage in your workshop due to the combination of robust plastic, high-quality rubber, and metal in its construction.

The router’s comfortable handles are one of its best features. Both a conventional knob grip and a larger, trigger-equipped handle are included. It’s easy to handle and provides assurance while you work.

The on-board precision instruments and rack-and-pinion mechanism make fine-tuning a breeze. This router makes it simple to set up your cuts and make adjustments in the midst of a job.

There is no plastic shield to protect you from flying wood chips, but a dust-collecting slot will quickly gather the majority of them for easy disposal.

It’s substantially larger than our top selection and can’t be used one-handed. It weighs 17.9 pounds, making it more of a chore to move it from one workpiece to another.

This router has a fast lock that makes changing pieces easier than if the top were flat, although doing so can still be a bit of a hassle due to the device’s design.

This router doesn’t have a detachable plunger, therefore you can’t use it with other bases.

Specifications

Brand DEWALT
Material Blend
Power Source Corded Electric
Item Dimensions LxWxH 8.38 x 6.1 x 5.75 inches
Voltage 120 Volts

Product Description

We knew that DEWALT power tools were going to be strong and reliable, so we were glad to see that this router lived up to those standards. The powerful 1-and-a-quarter horsepower, seven-ampere motor allows for non stop operation and reliable results.

The motor’s RPM ranges from 16,000 to 27,000, giving you flexibility while working with various substances. The range is adequate for most woodworking tasks, while it does not go as low as we would like and can cause some mild burning on softer materials.

The motor is well-balanced and provides excellent control while cutting, and the soft-start technology minimizes vibration at startup.

Its light weight of about 8 pounds makes it simple to move around your workpiece, and it may even be used single-handedly.

It has two different bases: one with a plunger for easy use, and another that is set at a specific depth. Easily fine-tune the plunger’s depth with the help of the base’s rack and pinion mechanism, and make precise cuts every time. The plunger’s handles are big and easy to grip, so it’s safe to use while you’re making cuts.

The bottom plate is the best we’ve seen on any router we tested, and the fixed-depth base is thin enough that you can operate it with one hand. An LED work light shines through the plate’s see-through construction to highlight your cut and the surface surrounding it, allowing for pinpoint accuracy. It’s easy to switch out the bases.

The 78.9 dB of noise that this router makes while operating is about par for the course. While it will be loud enough to need ear protection, it should not be too disruptive for others living in the same house.

Our testing has shown that this router is well worth the money because of its robust features, long lifespan, and user-friendly interface.

  • It’s quite lightweight
  • It has both a stationary and depressed bottom.
  • Rack and pinion systems simplify fine-tuning.
  • It’s not too expensive.
Cons

  • The size of the grips prevents secure cutting.

Specifications

Brand Hitachi
Item Weight ‎9.9 pounds
Power Source Corded Electric
Item Dimensions LxWxH ‎4 x 22.2 x 16 inches
Voltage 120 Volts

Product Description

Hitachi is now known as Metabo HPT, but its powerful and long-lasting tools for the construction industry remain unchanged. This router is built to last through numerous jobs and years of use.

A strong 214-horsepower, 11-amp motor allows for the rapid processing of a wide variety of materials. The motor’s speed may be adjusted from 8,000 to 24,000 RPM, allowing for precise, clean cuts through any kind of wood.

This router clocks in at a hefty 9.9 kg. It’s not too difficult to maneuver around your workpiece, and the feedback you receive will boost your confidence as you do your job.

You’ll want to wear earplugs because it cranks out 79.5 dB while in use, but it shouldn’t wake up the neighbors.

There are two different types of bases for this router: a plunger base and a fixed-depth base. Rubber grips on the plunger base are comfortable to hold, but their modest size doesn’t inspire much confidence when you’re really using the tool for cutting. To allow for fine-tuning of the plunger’s depth, it is equipped with a rack and pinion mechanism and a simple knob for adjustment.

Similarly to the plunger base, the fixed-depth base only has modest handles. In addition, the fixed-depth base has a fine-tuning adjustment that allows for accurate and quick cutting without the need to switch bases often.

When considering the capabilities and features, this router is a steal for its pricing.

6. PORTER-CABLE 450 Compact Router

The Best Plunge Router in 2022
PORTER-CABLE 450 Compact Router (Reference: amazon.com)

Pros & Cons

Pros
  • It features a robust motor that can handle any substance.
  • As a result of its light weight and convenience, it may be used for extended periods of time.
  • It has a stationary base and a plunger.
  • This facilitates fine-tuned changes.
  • Longevity is not an issue at all.
Cons
  • The motor speed is fixed and cannot be changed.
  • Softer substances may be burned by it.
  • The immovable base makes it difficult to operate with one hand.
  • It’s difficult to acclimate to the new depth.

Specifications

Brand ‎PORTER-CABLE
Style ‎W/ Plunge Base
Power Source Corded Electric
Motor Power 1.25HP

Product Description

This router from PORTER-CABLE exemplifies the company’s commitment to high-powered, high-performance products. The reliable and powerful 114-horsepower, 7-amp motor ensures that you can complete any woodworking job you can imagine.

You can’t change the motor speed to suit your workpiece because it has a set speed of 27,000 RPM. It’s quick enough to cut softwoods and hardwoods without splintering or jamming, although you may have to sand off any burned spots.

It’s one of the lightest routers we tried at just 5.5 pounds. Since it weighs so little, it’s not difficult to move it around your workpiece, and it’s pleasant to hold for long periods of time while working on more intricate tasks.

It has both a plunger base and a standard base. Large rubber grips on the plunger base provide for a firm grasp and sufficient control during use. Furthermore, it incorporates a rack and pinion mechanism that permits precision cutting and adjusting.

The fixed-depth base is difficult to operate with one hand since it lacks a rubber grip. This base is also depth adjustable, albeit the adjustments are less exact, and the bit is raised and lowered by rotating the base. While this approach of depth modification isn’t our favorite, it is useful to have some say over the situation, even with a fixed-depth foundation.

This router by PORTER-CABLE has metal and strong plastic parts, giving it the sense of being able to withstand significant abuse in a workshop.

7. Ryobi RE180PL1G Plunge Router

The Best Plunge Router in 2022
Ryobi RE180PL1G Plunge Router (Reference: amazon.com)

Pros & Cons

Pros
  • For precise, clean cuts, its motor is strong enough to
  • The speed of the motor is variable.
  • It operates with a minimal amount of audible noise.
  • Access to the workpiece is unobstructed.
  • This feature makes it simple and accurate to alter the depth of a shot.
Cons
  • You can’t take the plunge base off.
  • Low-speed motors can cause softwoods to catch fire.
  • You could tire of carrying it around for lengthy periods of time.
  • Small and not very grippable, the handles.

Specifications

Brand RYOBI
Material NA
Power Source AC
Item Dimensions LxWxH 9.75 x 10.5 x 9.75 inches
Voltage 120 Volts

Product Description

Although Ryobi‘s low-priced power tools are capable of serious work, they are more suited to occasional or hobbyist use. Although powerful and reasonably priced, this router lacks several of the features of more expensive models.

Given that the plunger base is fixed in place, it can only be used as a plunge router. Unless you lock the depth at its highest setting, you cannot use this as a fixed-depth router.

It includes a 2-horsepower, 10-amp motor that can handle virtually any woodworking job, and the motor speed can be adjusted from 15,000 RPM to 25,000 RPM.

The speed may be adjusted to suit the job at hand, but even at its lowest level, it is still too rapid for some stocks and may cause some mild burning. Once the router is not in motion, the speed may be easily adjusted using the knob with its six presets.

Its 10.84-pound weight means it provides useful feedback during cutting but may make prolonged usage uncomfortable.

Despite the strength of the motor, this is one of the quietest routers we tested at just 42 dB. This means it’s highly unlikely to be an annoyance to anyone else in your house.

An integrated clear guard at the base prevents the base from becoming fouled with cutting debris and provides an unobstructed line of sight for pinpoint precision.

The side handles are tiny and are made of smooth metal rather than rubber for better hold. Unfortunately, we can’t help but feel that the situation might benefit from the addition of rubber or at least textured plastic.

The rack and pinion mechanism allow for fine-tuning, and the built-in gauges facilitate the establishment of exact cutting and depth settings.

  • It has an ergonomically shaped grip on the handle.
  • The motor has 2.2 horsepower and turns at between 8,000 and 25,000 RPMs.
  • Possesses a simple plunger action for use.

Specifications

Brand BOSCH
Power Source Corded-electric
Voltage 120 Volts
Item Weight 12.6 Pounds
Horsepower 2.3 hp

Product Description

This tool, which weighs around 18 pounds out of the box, is built to last and operate well. However, this adds weight that makes the tool awkward to use for hand routing. You may attach the Bosch MRP23EVS to a router table with the included threaded holes. There is a lockable power switch on the handle, and the other controls are similarly conveniently placed.

Micro-adjustments may be made with ease because of the smooth plunge mechanism and the ergonomic, comfortable grips. Despite the router’s heft, it nevertheless performs admirably. With dust management being an issue, the Bosch MRP23EVS’s lack of a plastic cover on the operator side is perplexing.

The 2.25 HP motor of the Bosch MRP23EVS allows for blade rotation rates of 8,000 RPM all the way up to 25,000 RPM.

The chip shield and lock-on trigger switch provide the product with a more professional and secure appearance and feel, respectively. Purchase Tips for a Plunge Router

Buying a router requires careful consideration of a number of factors. It’s important to think about why you’re making this purchase, whether you use it sometimes or it’s the lifeblood of your company. Assorted routers are available in what seems like an infinite variety.

A router is a paramount piece of equipment for any serious carpenter. In particular, if you are doing precise cutting, which calls for a light touch and a sharp intellect. If precision is required in assembly, then it is even more important to invest in a high-quality router. When shopping for a router, you might want to consider the following:

Horsepower

What you can do with a plunge router will be significantly impacted by its power. Precision cutting of any kind needs constant power. Larger pieces require more force to penetrate the wood, thus this is essential. To get such results, high-quality routers need at least 2 horsepower (HP). An unstable router that skips or slows with pressure and results in imprecise cutting is the last thing you want.

Speed

If you need to alter bits, variable speed is required. Small bits are the limit for single-speed routers. When dealing with larger bits, more intricate patterns, or both, a slower cutting speed is required for a more exact cut. A variable-speed router is an answer to this dilemma, as it will let you utilize different bits for a wider range of cuts.

An Easy Hold

Intricate intricacy requires extensive use of the router over the course of several hours. Maintaining control of the router and avoiding weariness depends in part on how well you are able to grasp it. It’s likely that your productivity at work will drop if you’re too tired to keep going. If you let go of the reins, your work will most likely not turn out the way you envisioned it.

The Size of a Collet

The standard bit sizes for wood routers are 1/4 inch and 1/2 inch. While half-inch pieces are more costly, they are unquestionably more stable and generate far less clatter. You should choose a router that works with several bit sizes, such as 1/2-inch and 1/4-inch. Because of this, you’ll be able to get a lot done and do it well.

Reducing Dust

Working with a router always generates a significant amount of dust. Any method that makes it possible to inspect your work without having to clean it constantly would be greatly appreciated. If your router has a vacuum port, you may spend less time cleaning and more time seeing clearly. It’s also not good for your health to breathe in dust, so avoid doing so if you can. Invest in a router with dust-control features, first and foremost, for your own protection.

Accessories for Routers

When working with wood, it’s helpful to have a wide selection of equipment on hand. This work requires a high level of expertise. Make sure your router has the appropriate accessories or that you can buy them separately so that you can do all of your tasks. The efficiency of routers is directly affected by this. Having the appropriate equipment is vital to achieving success in any endeavor. When it comes to accessories, it’s also important to check that they are easily accessible. Some replacement components and add-ons may not be available if you buy an out-of-date router. Make sure there are a lot of options for the router you’re considering buying.

Alter Your Role

Both hands are needed to operate a router. Where are the switches located, and are they easy to use? Can you accomplish a clean break while maintaining control of the router? Factors to think about when selecting a router include how it fits in your hand, where the grips and switches are located, and what kind of feedback they provide.

Warranty

You are making an investment when you buy something that you will use for a long time or depend on for your livelihood. You should only get a router from a reliable brand that stands behind both their goods and your money. When anything goes wrong and you can’t obtain help, it’s the worst feeling in the world. This is a financial and time drain.

FAQs about Condensing Boilers

1. Why Would You Need To Use A Plunge Router?

Plunge routers have a cutting bit that is manually lowered into the material by an upward and downward motion of the base, which is loaded with a spring on each side.

2. How Do I Use A Table And A Plunge Router?

Just as it sounds, using a plunge router on a tabletop is a breeze. It is recommended that you inspect your equipment before beginning to ensure that you have the proper bits, motor, and collets installed.

Clamp the guide into position so that when the router is being pushed downwards, the bit will line up with the pattern you wish to cut. Put the pieces into the collet and set the gauge to the desired depth of cut.

Then, using two hands for support, pull the trigger and push it downwards. This will engage the equipment with the wood you wish to work on.

Move the router in the direction you wish to make your cut. After you’ve made a cut, take note of how hard you pressed down on the device’s handles.

3. Can A Plunge Router Be Utilized In A Stationary Position?

Yes, it can. It is possible to lock a plunge router in place and utilize it in the same manner as a fixed router, giving consumers more flexibility than ever before.

4. How To Plunge-Router-Cut A Tenon?

First, the router table must be set up, the exposure must be measured, and the bit must be secured in position in order to cut the tendon.

Second, position the sled, tighten the clamp, and evaluate the bit’s cutting depth.

Start the router and remove the test tenon, then flip the workpiece over and remove the second cheek and shoulder.

After that, you may cut the actual tenons; if the length of the tenon is more than the diameter of the bit you’re using, just make a few more passes with the workpiece moved away from the stop.
