Kawasaki received an order from Malaysia’s Sime Darby Energy Solution Sdn. Bhd for a cogeneration system “GPB50D” with M5A, the world's highest efficient gas turbine in the 5 MW class. This is the first order for this particular cogeneration system Kawasaki has received from a customer in Malaysia.

Kawasaki has delivered more than 20 gas turbine cogeneration systems to customers in Malaysia in the past, and its systems have earned high praise in the market. The company secured this latest order thanks to high overall praise for its excellent product reliability and after-sales services in past orders. Furthermore, Kawasaki will continue to pursue reliable energy supplies and environmental load reductions and contribute to the realization of low- and zero-carbon-emissions societies while striving to precisely address a diverse array of market needs.

[Kawasaki Receives Third Order for an 86,700 m³ LPG-fueled LPG/NH3 Carrier]

Kawasaki has concluded a shipbuilding contract for an 86,700 m³ LPG and liquefied ammonia gas (NH3) carrier powered by LPG fuel for Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha.

The vessel is equipped with separate cargo tanks designed to carry LPG and NH3 at the same time. Kawasaki plans to complete the construction of the vessels at its Sakaide Works in 2024.

The advantage of this dual-purpose vessel is its capability to simultaneously carry LPG, which is already used as a low-carbon energy source, and NH3, a new fuel contributing to the establishment of a decarbonized society. Another feature is the greater capacity of the cargo tanks as compared to conventional carriers, which was achieved without significantly changing the vessel’s length, breadth, or other main specifications.

[Kawasaki to issue its First Sustainability Bond]

Kawasaki decided to issue its first sustainability bond this July. The funds raised through a public offering in the Japanese market are planned to use for the dissemination of the automated robotic PCR testing system and for projects to build a clean hydrogen supply chain.

Remote Track Monitoring Services Launched in North America]

Kawasaki announced that it has launched remote track monitoring services with information and communication technology (ICT) in North America for the first time. Kawasaki has received an order for the services from one of the North American Class 1 railroads. In this contract, locomotives will be equipped with monitoring devices, and Kawasaki will provide remote track monitoring service to support track maintenance.

Daily inspections are essential for rail infrastructure. As for track inspections, soundness is confirmed and maintenance plan is developed through inspection by dedicated track inspection cars and visual inspection by inspector.

[Automated Robotic Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) Testing System Installed at Kansai International Airport]

Kawasaki announced that it has installed an automated robotic PCR testing system (hereinafter “the System”) at the entrance to the international departure terminal located on the fourth floor of Kansai International Airport (KIX), in preparation for the planned launch of Japan’s first airport PCR testing service for passengers taking outbound flights.

The global expansion of COVID-19 has severely limited peoples’ activities, resulting in a significant reduction in the number of airport users. To achieve an economic recovery in such an environment, increasing the use of airports-our transportation hubs-is an urgent matter to which Japanese and other governments, as well as industries across the world, are paying close attention.

Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. announced its receipt of an order for an AUV called SPICE.

SPICE is the world's first AUV equipped with a robot arm for performing subsea pipeline inspections, developed based on a fusion of submarine-related technologies and industrial robot technologies fostered at Kawasaki over many years. In addition, it is operated using a docking station also developed by Kawasaki, which increases inspection operation efficiency and reduces cost requirements, while also benefiting crews working on a support vessel by reducing their burden and improving safety.

Kawasaki will reflect user feedback and requests from the customer in future development and supply high-performance and quality products to meet the growing demand of AUV in the subsea inspection market. [Kawasaki Develops Cargo Containment System for Large Liquefied Hydrogen Carrier with World's Highest Carrying Capacity]

 

Kawasaki announced its obtainment of approval in principle (AIP) from Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK) for a cargo containment system (CCS) offering the world's largest capacity (40,000 ㎥ class per tank), developed for use on a large liquefied hydrogen carrier.

 

The CCS for which the AIP was obtained is designed to contain cryogenic liquefied hydrogen, reduced to a temperature of –253°C and one eight-hundredth its initial volume, for shipping by sea in large amounts. This containment system has the largest capacity of its kind worldwide used in liquefied hydrogen marine transport.

 

Kawasaki is currently developing a large, 160,000 ㎥ liquefied hydrogen carrier using four CCS tanks, which is scheduled to start commercial operations by the middle of the 2020s.

In addition, the company announced the start of testing services using the new PCR testing system, in collaboration with the University.

Kawasaki will use the new PCR testing system on samples, then send the results back to the University for final determinations. Since December 2020, the University has been carrying out tests at a maximum rate of 1,500 samples per day. When the new PCR testing system enters into full operation, it will be possible to test up to 2,500 additional samples daily for a total of up to 4,000 samples per day, which is one of Japan's highest testing rates for a single facility.

[Bulk Carrier STELLA NAVIS Delivered]

Kawasaki announced that it delivered the bulk carrier STELLA NAVIS, with a capacity of 81,000 DWT, for FAIR WIND MARSHALL S.A. at NACKS, which is located in Nantong City.

The vessel has a flush deck with a forecastle and seven holds. By adopting energy-saving technologies, we have improved fuel efficiency and achieved CO2 reductions equivalent to EEDI Phase 2. We will continue to contribute to the reduction of various types of emissions in the shipping industry by actively building merchant ships that comply with environmental regulations.

[H&V Shield Machines: Main Players Supporting Difficult Underground Construction]

Do you know how the sewerage systems that protect our lives from flooding caused by heavy rains and water pollution caused by wastewater are constructed?

Kawasaki develops and manufactures shield machines for boring tunnels. In particular, we were the first in the world to develop and manufacture the H&V (Horizontal & Vertical) shield machine, which enables complex tunnel formations. Spiral construction utilizing the H&V method, in which two shield machines work side by side to bore a tunnel, has contributed to the development of sewerage systems under challenging tunneling conditions.
